The Counteroffensive Is Coming

The New York Times:

In 1944, the U.S. and its allies tricked the Nazis into believing that an invasion of France would take place on a different part of the Atlantic coast than it did. Today, Ukraine is similarly hoping to surprise Russia with the start of a spring or summer counteroffensive. The Russians know that a major attack is coming but not the form it will take.

The outcome of that counteroffensive could shape the outcome of the war. A successful campaign by Ukraine, retaking territory that Russia now controls, could cause President Vladimir Putin to fear outright defeat and look for a face-saving peace deal. A failed counteroffensive could cause Ukraine’s Western allies to wonder whether the war is winnable and potentially push Ukraine toward an unfavorable truce.

The Ukrainian spring counteroffensive — if it ever even happens — is not going to succeed. It cannot succeed. All this talk of recapturing lands from Russia is hysterical nonsense. We are simply gearing up to waste more billions of dollars, and more tens of thousands of Ukrainian lives, for no sane reason whatsoever.

Belgorod Raid: Insurgents Defeated After Rare Cross-Border Incursion – Russia

BBC News:

Armed insurgents who crossed the border from Ukraine to launch attacks in Russia’s Belgorod region have been defeated, Moscow claims.

Villages near the border were evacuated after coming under shellfire in one of the most significant cross-border raids since the start of Russia’s invasion.

Russia says 70 attackers were killed and insists the fighters are Ukrainian.

But Kyiv has denied involvement and two Russian paramilitary groups have said they were behind the incursion.

Nothing else is helping us win this stupid war which we stupidly started with Russia in Ukraine. Why not throw in a half-baked, Bay of Pigs-style incursion into Russia that can only result in our further embarrassment and defeat?

Senior Ukrainian Officials Fear Counterattack May Not Live Up To Hype

The Washington Post:

“The expectation from our counteroffensive campaign is overestimated in the world,” Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said in an interview this past week. “Most people are … waiting for something huge,” he added, which he fears may lead to “emotional disappointment.”

The planned counterattack — made possible by donated Western weapons and training — could mark the most consequential phase of the war, as Ukraine seeks to snatch back significant territory and prove it is worthy of continued support.

Offensive military operations typically require overwhelming advantage, and with Russian forces dug into heavily fortified defenses all across the 900-mile-long front, it is hard to gauge how far Ukraine will get.

The Ukrainian spring counteroffensive probably will not materialize. It definitely will not be anything spectacular. When it is over, if it ever does happen, Russia will still be winning.

Wagner Chief Says Moscow Promised More Ammo After Bakhmut Pull-Out Threat

Barron’s:

Russian paramilitary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin said Sunday he had received “a promise” of more ammunition from the Russian army, after he threatened to pull his frontline Wagner troops out of Bakhmut.

“They promised to give us all the ammunition and armaments we need to continue the operations,” said Prigozhin, following his blistering attack on military chiefs over the situation in Bakhmut, the epicentre of Ukraine’s fight against Moscow’s forces.

He said they had been assured “that everything necessary will be provided” to fighters around Bakhmut.

Prigozhin’s Wagner group has spearheaded the grinding, months-long Russian assault on Bakhmut, almost capturing the city in the longest and bloodiest battle of the campaign.

All of this drama with the Wagners may be substantial on some level, but it really seems like a head fake. Even Kadyrov got in on the joke. Will the Ukrainians take the bait, and funnel scarce resources into the hopeless fight in order to take advantage of perceived Russian weakness, to the detriment of their promised spring counteroffensive?
